It seems that single parent households are steadily increasing year after year. It can be tough maintaining adequate income while taking care of the children. And for many single mothers the income is hardly adequate with most working at low-paying jobs. According to the census bureau, the poverty rate for single mothers increased to 31.6 percent in 2010 from 29.9 in 2009. And children raised in impoverished urban areas are more likely to get involved with crime and getting incarcerated. So many single mothers want to get out of that situation and live better more successful lives for themselves and their children. Luckily, there are many Grants and Scholarships for Single Mothers available to those looking to improve their financial situation.

Patsy Takemoto Mink

The Patsy Takemoto Mink Education Foudation offers a Scholarship program directed specifically toward low-income women with children (i.e. single mothers), and provides $2,000 to assist with the cost of higher education. It’s a good idea to use this in combination with financial aid to pay for living living expenses. You can use the money from this program for living accommodations or other expenses. In order to receive this Scholarship, single mothers must meet certain criteria. Many women across the nation apply for this Scholarship yet only a few win (only five winners a year), still though, it wouldn’t hurt to give it a try.

Ford Opportunity

This Scholarship is for people in Oregan and Siskiyou County, California. This program allows for more winners (120 winners in 2011) and will cover 90 percent or up to $25,000 a year in funds to help you with college. This is a yearly Scholarship where you need to submit your application by March 1st. You also need to complete a FAFSA to be considered in this Scholarship and go in for an interview once selected. Scholarships4Moms

This is a random drawing Scholarship that awards $10,000 toward educational expenses. The only requirement for this Scholarship is that you be enrolled in a college and are at least 18 years old. And even though this is mainly directed toward women, men have won in the past before. If you’re currently in college and don’t have enough time to apply to some of the more traditional Scholarships, this one only requires you to register – no essays or extracurricular activities needed – and you’re eligible to win $10,000 for school. And to give yourself more chances to win, they allow you to register once every week during the registration period.

And of course, federal grants are viable options for single mothers who are in the low-income category to help pay for college. Many single mothers live busy lives providing for their families and working full-time, so applying to traditional Scholarships that require essays and other work you simply don’t have time for can be difficult.
